Had enough of the winter doldrums already? Well, I hate to be the one to break it to you, but we’ve still got quite a ways to go. February will soon be upon us, which means the more superstitious (and groundhog-obsessed) among us will have the answer as to whether to expect even more winter misery (or winter wonder, for those of us who actually like this season!) to come. On the bright side, at least the days are already getting longer and we’re about to transition into the shortest month of the year. Of course, that also means entertainment junkies will be sorely put to the test to get through all the movies and shows joining and leaving the streaming service cycle next month. So get out your paper and pencils and start taking notes, because we’ve rounded up all the best items that will be coming to Netflix in February 2022 for your convenience. Hop to it!

The Book Of Eli

There are actors, and then there are actors. Denzel Washington most certainly falls into the latter category, having provided decades of entertainment as one of Hollywood’s best and most reliable leading men in the business. It’s no different in “The Book of Eli,” a post-apocalyptic story about a man making his way through the wasteland of the former United States of America. He has to fend off cannibals, robbers, one unhinged town leader (played by Gary Oldman), and even take care of a young woman (Mila Kunis) along the way, all while attempting his own meditative and spiritual journey along the way. It’s violent, disturbing, and just thoughtful enough to keep us coming back to it again and again.

The Bourne Ultimatum

What other modern action trilogy can claim to wield as much influence as the “Bourne” trilogy? Sure, many would argue that its impact has been to the detriment of the genre, flooding the market with all sorts of headache-inducing copycats … but, importantly, none of them ever understood the visual poetry and deceptively clearsighted action on display. Even fewer trilogies end on their highest note possible, but “The Bourne Ultimatum” is a perfect capstone to some of our most important post-9/11 artifacts. Attempting to find room for subplots about government surveillance and overreach, Edward Snowden-styled whistleblowing, and — oh, yeah — the entire conclusion to Jason Bourne’s (Matt Damon) journey, director Paul Greengrass pulls off this difficult balancing act and makes it look easy. Just as long as you stop here, naturally. Nope, they never made any more “Bourne” movies after this. Not even one.

The Last Samurai

There’s no avoiding the fact that “The Last Samurai” positions a white perspective in an East Asian story in a way that comes across as less sensitive now than it did when it premiered. That said, the joys that can be found in its missteps can’t be entirely swept under the rug, either. Director Edward Zwick’s sweeping samurai drama hearkens back to the kind of Hollywood epic that simply doesn’t get made anymore — or, at least, not with this sort of attention to detail, vivid commitment to visual splendor, and a sense of filmmaking that prioritizes the feeling of getting lost in a story and its characters. Two and half hours of refreshingly old-fashioned and heartrending drama later, and you’ll find yourself asking the same question I did: Why don’t they make ’em like this anymore?

The Other Guys

Adam McKay has been making headlines with his pivot towards more serious-minded and award-worthy movies in recent years, starting with “The Big Short” and continuing with the divisive “Vice” and 2021’s “Don’t Look Up.” Though these movies have certainly caused a stir among viewers, I find it ironic that even his “low-brow” studio comedies packed their fair share of overt political and social commentary, as well. “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” doesn’t even try to hide its commentary on the George W. Bush era of American politics and his “Anchorman” films similarly deal with sexual politics, women in the workplace, and even racial diversity, as well. At their heart, all of these movies are ridiculously funny, too, and “The Other Guys” sets itself apart as one of McKay’s absolute best all-around efforts. Will Ferrell can do this type of role in his sleep, but that’s not to say that he sleepwalks through it at all. Combined with Mark Wahlberg and McKay’s laser-sharp writing, the comedy trio help elevate what could’ve been a mindless comedy into something far more memorable.

Inventing Anna

The upcoming Netflix series finally arrives next month with no shortage of anticipation. The latest Shonda Rhimes production is loosely based on the Jessica Pressler New York Magazine profile, “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People,” which recounts Delvey’s crime spree targeting some of the world’s richest and most powerful socialites. Starring Julia Garner and Anna Chlumsky, we only have the trailers to go by and help set our expectations. One way or another, this will likely have people talking. Check out the synopsis below.

In “Inventing Anna,” a journalist with a lot to prove investigates the case of Anna Delvey, the Instagram-legendary German heiress who stole the hearts of New York’s social scene — and stole their money as well. But is Anna New York’s biggest con woman, or is she simply the new portrait of the American dream? Anna and the reporter form a dark, funny, love-hate bond as Anna awaits trial and our reporter fights the clock to answer the biggest question in NYC: who is Anna Delvey? The series is inspired by the New York Magazine article “How an Aspiring ‘It’ Girl Tricked New York’s Party People — and its Banks” by Jessica Pressler, who also serves as a producer.
